Thinking activity on The White Tiger and Slumdog Millionaire

Similarities between The White Tiger and Slumdog Millionaire.
1) Narrative structure:-

The narrative structure in both ,novel and film is same. In the novel Balram saw the poster and remember his past. Same as in movie Jamal have questions on screen in KBC show and for the for the answer he is going to his past. In the film the first scene starts from police station and in novel police are searching for Balram. He narrate the condition that hoe police make mistakes to writing about him. So in both, the situation is working parallel and flashback system is same.

2)Indianness

In the movie and novel the picture of India is presented. Many things in both are same about India.

◆Slum area
In novel Balram narrate the slum area of India. What is the situation of people and how they live in poverty etc present reality of Indian poor people. In the film we can find the real condition of poor people who lives on slum area. They have not the basic and necessary things for living the life. So both present real India.

◆Family structure
In the novel Balram explain Indian family and their problem.parents have dozen of children in India and they all are living together. In movie also there is a picture of Indian family. It present the idea of "वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्".

◆Education system
Balram was not able to complete his education due to poverty. He speaks about education system and how teacher doing corruption. In the film also we can see the real picture of Indian education system.

◆Police system
In the novel Balram is doing satire on police system of India. How they are also a followers of rich people and of politician and how they are doing corruption. They make mistake about Balram' s poster . In the movie also the director make satire on it.
Another points which are same in both is intuition, two brothers, poetic  justice difference between knowledge and understanding etc.

3)List of the questions asked in the film Slumdog Millionaire
Here are the questions which is asked to Jamal and he answers it all through the remembering of his past.

1)Who was the star in the 1973 hit film "Zanzeer"
2)A picture of three lions is seen in the national emblem of India. What is written underneath it?
3)In depiction of God Rama, he is famously holding what in his right hand?
4) The song " Darshan Do Ghanshyam" was written by which famous Indian poet?
5)On the American One Hundred Dollar Bill, there is portrait of which American Statesman?
6)Who invented the revolver?
7)Cambridge Circus is in which UK City?
8)Which cricketer has scored the most first class centuries in history?
9)In Alexander Dumas' book, "The Three Musketeers", two of the musketeers are called Athos and Porthos. What was the name of the third Musketeer?
These all questions are apt and I do not want to add any other question.

4)on what ground can you deconstruct the film with reference of post colonial tools /theories.

Post colonial idea presented by writer and director in the mindset of other people about India. The director present reality od India and show the scene of foreigners visit in India. The situation of Indian people and of foreigners is totally different. In novel Balram narrate poor India to professor of China. Most of the visitors of India still they have the mind set about poor India. They always narrate India as a poor and dirty country .Most of the Indians are still like the lifestyle and other things about them and dislikes other things which is Indian. For example
Recently in Department of English MKBU the professor from Argentina came to visit and they had found dirty place everywhere. It present the mindset of other people.

5) Compare with texture and treatment of subject content in film and novel.

The structure of narration about India is same in novel and film. The texture of movie and novel is same like corrupt India, poor villages, darkness, cheating etc. These us similar treatment of class and cast system in both. It present richness and poverty of people. Balram and Jamal have same poor family while landlords and rich class Mumbai's people have same life.
The same texture of India is presented in both . Treatment of subject is also similar in both.

6)How far do you agree with  the India represented in the novel "The White Tiger".

The India is presented by Adiga is a reality about the nation. People are living in slums  still today and someday they can not get food for one time a day. The life of villages people ,family and their belief ,all this things presented by Adiga as it is. He mentions the corruption system of school and harassment of landlords which is not fake but reality. Poor are become  more poor and rich are become more rich. Writers like Chetan Bhagat , Arvind Adiga, they present the  situation of India as it is.

7)Do you believe that Balram's story is the archetype of all stories of 'rags to riches'?

Balram' s  story is a story of rags to riches like the character of Jamal in Slumdog  millionaire. Balram had spend poor life in his childhood and leave his education also.  He become a car driver of an entrepreneur and then he find his way for becoming rich. He decided to kill his owner Ashok and  ran with money which Ashok have with him. After to kill him he leave the  village and become an entrepreneur with the changing identity.
