What is meter and why meters use in poem?
In a poetry meters is the basic rhythmic structure of a verse or linesform in verse. Many tradisional verse forms prescribe a specific verse meters or a certain set of meters alternating in particular order. There are four characteristics in meters of poetry. In poetry has an qualitative meters or quantitative meters. The familiar type of meters in english literature poetry called qualitative meters with stressed syllable coming at regular Intervals. Many Romance language use a scheme that is some what similar but where the position of only particular stressed syllable needs to be fixed. Some classical language in contrast used different scheme known as quantitative meters where pattern biased on syllable weight rather than stress. In the dactylic hexameters of classical Latin and classical Greek for example each of the six feet making up the line was either a dactyl or a spondee a long syllable. Was literally one that took longer to pronounce than a short syllable specifically a syllable consisting of a long vowel or dipthong or followed by two consonant. A number of other ancient language also used quantitative meters such as sanskrit and classical Arabic.
Fakeer of Jangheera is a Metrical Tale:
In the poem Fakeer of Jangheera Derozio dexterously mixes the tantric hindu mythology Islamics ans Christian traditions to create a composite whole that corresponds to the elegaic European tradition of the nineteenth century and the syncretistic Sufi tradition of fifteenth century. The fakeer poem is in two cantos of twenty eight and twenty four stanza respectively written in the lambic, Anapestic, Trochaic and Dactylic meter to suit the different rhymes ranging from normal spoken voice and slow description to the racy battles and the chant of priest and women.Derozio prose writing reveal his concept of aesthetic and ideas of syncretistic Democratic culture within early colonialism.
In this poem he uses many meters as like Lambic, Anapestic ,Trochaic, Dactylic, Spondee ,Pyrrhus, manometer , diameter, trimeter, tetrameter, pentameter, hexameters , heptameter, etc. All this meters is symbolized as like”-“ long and “U” short. In the poem Fakeer of Jangheera Derozio use these all meters for example:
“ How like you spirits on the wing
The view less winds are wandering
Now over the flower Bell fair they creep
Walking sweer ours out of sleep.”
In this stanza poet use Anapestic meter and Dactylic meter also. It shows the look of dactylic meters as like -UU| - UU |-UU ……
And in Anapestic pentameter the mark of”x” representing unstressed syllable or mark of”/” representing astressed syllable.
Another meter was used by him is lambic pentameter. It is a stressed syllable. A standard line of lambic pentameter is five lambic feet in row as like Da Dum Da Dum Da Dum Da Dum Da Dum , for example,
“Lo! Something moving over the plain
Like morning mist upon the main”
In this line first syllable is unaccented and second syllable is accented as example of lambic pentameter.
“ on to the altar and scatter the flower
Sweeten the path as ye wonder along
On to the altar another blest hour
Brings to her spirit the kinnura’ s song.”
This is another example of lambic pentameter. In this stanza lambic pentameter is totally applied by poet. First syllable is also unaccented and second syllable is accented.
Here some examples of trochaic meter in this stanza
“Go! When the winds are singing to the waves
Bid them be hushed and flee unto their cave
Go! When the spirit of the Strom on high
Drive their mad coursers through the blackening sky.”
In this stanza the using symbol of-U-U-U-U-U and the structure of foots is Dum Da/ Dum Da /Dum Da/ Dum Da……
Another example is
“God of this glorious universe! The sea smile
In thy glance and gladdens in the ray
And lifteth up it’s voice in praise to thee
Giver of good creator of the day? “
In this stanza also structure and rhymes scheme is same for example use of sea…. Thee, and ray ….day….etc.
At last here shows some spondic meter for example:
“By the crown upon the brow
By the face so brilliant now
By thy splendour by thy power
By the glory of this hour
By the service we have done.”
In this spondic meter this stanza has foots and it is also follow the symbol Dum Dum Dum
Another example of spondic meter is
“ Bring the Pearl of purest white
Bring the diamond flashing light
Bring your gifts of choicest things”
So here also structure like same stressed/stressed and also Dum Dum.
In this poem Derozio use simile . He also use metaphors and another meters too. Beginnings of the day is compared with the awakening of the child as his smile bring heavenly feeling like wise the morning is a time when everything new.
In the literature use of meters show the history also. In all language as like sanskrit, gujarati , hindi, arebic, all use meter and their have different kinds of rules to use of meters. The use of meters and rhymes scheme in poem shows the knowledge of poets and how he use that meter also shows his awareness of use of meters. In this poem Derozio use many of figure of speech and give rhythmic touch.
Rhymes scheme and meter makes poem more attractive and beautiful. It is also give us knowledge about different kinds of meters and use of rhythm also. In the poem Fakeer of Jangheera Derozio use the meters to show the traditions of that times ,rules and rituals of that times and he also give example of cast and class conflict.
