About The Novel Old Man And The Sea:

The Old Man And The Sea is novel
written by Ernest Hemingway. This is
the novel of struggle of one old man
who got failure in fishing for last eighty
four days. His name was Santiago a
Cuban fisherman.
He has one friend named Manolin,
whose parents denied him to fishing
with old man only because of he was
unlucky. Though Manolin live with him
and bring food for an old man each
night. During dinner time they both
talked on latest development in
American baseball and for trials of an old
man ‘s hero Joe DiMaggio.
An Old man has hope for eighty fifth day
and he believe that eighty fifth is lucky
number. On the eighty fifth day, in the
early morning he went for fishing . At
the noon he got big fish which he called
Marlin. He hooks the fish and tried to
got it. An Old man has fear to lost the
fish so he tied the line with his shoulder,
backs and hand. The fish pulls the boat
all through day , through the night
,through the another day and another
night. Santiago endures pain from line in
hand and injured though he was not
defeated. Fish tries for moving and it
also cuts an old man ‘ s hand so many
time. An Old man has sympathy for
Marlin. He said it that he loves it, respect
it but he would kill it. At last on the third
day fish tired and Santiago killed it. That
was very big fish , an Old man ever seen ,
he tied it with boat and bring it. Marllin’s
blood attract the shark and old man fight
with first Mako shark and he lost his
harpoon and lengths of valuable rope.
He also fought with another sharks who
ate the Marline and only leave the
skeleton, tail and head. Santiago feeling
sad for going far away and he sacrificing
is great and worthy opponent. He came
home and sleep deeply.
On next morning Manolin came to meet
him and wake up him. Other fisherman
gathered around the fish and amazed.
Manolin brings coffee and newspaper
for an old man and the talked about
baseball score. Manoline decided to fish
with him once again though his father
denied. An Old man going to sleep and
he dreams about line on the beaches of
Africa.

What is hope and despair? How it effects
in humans life?
Hope mean we have some belief in life
about something. We thought that this
will be true and its really became true ,
that mean or hope our desire is fulfilled.
Human beings have hope from life, from
parents, from friend etc. Not only
humans have but animals also have
hope from life and from others.
Despair mean we have hope for
something and we can not get that, that
make us disappointed and we felt
despair in our life. Sometimes animals
also felt this situation and got despair.
This ability allow people for making good
or bad , negative or positive expectation
from life. Hope makes people happy and
this is the engine of civilization, in other
side despair make people unhappy and
this make him/her unable to think more
about success and for more hope.
Sometimes what happens in our life that
we make hope about something, think a
lot about it, making dream for it etc but
when the result came and it is not in
favor of us then that make us
disappointed .Hope make peoples mind
very creative. Hope provide one
remarkable opportunity to understand
the relation between mind and brain. So
the capability of human brain to
construct imaginary is illustrated by
hope and despair in human life.
Let’s take example of hope and despair .
In exam, students doing hard work and
they have hope for best result . but
sometimes the result will not come in
the favor of student and he/she
disappointed.

Another best example of deer’s hope for
water what called Mirage. When a deer
has thrust and it will find water on
road ,it has hope that it will get water
but that is only its illusion .

Hope and despair in the novel The Old
Man and The Sea.

1)An Old man ‘s hope from last eighty
four days: An Old fisherman fishing from
last eighty four days but he had not get
any fish . He had hope from that but he
became disappointed. When he came
back to home on eighty fourth day he
was totally tired but he had not lost his
hope . Other fisher man got very good
fish and they make fun on him that old
man has no fish. But this would not
make him disappointed and still he had
smile on his face.
He had hope for next day which will
became lucky day for him. He think that
eighty fifth is lucky number.

2)An Old man’s hope from Manolin and
he became despair: An Old man had not
any companion in his life which other
fisher man had . He was totally alone .
He had not family , not had wife and no
children. But he had one little friend
named Manolin. Manoline’s parents
wanted to teach him good fishing so
they send Manolin with old man for
fishing. But an old man had got failure
from last eighty four day that’s why
Manoline’ s father denied him to go with
an old man . They wanted that their boy
will learn good fishing form other
fisherman who were master in fishing.
So this make an old main disappointed.
When he was in sea he also wants
someone’s help and company. He
missed Manoline when he catching fish.
So by this we can say that he had hope
from Manolin but he got despair.

3)Manolin’s hope from his parents and
he became despair: Manoline was a
fisherman’s boy whose parents want to
saw him a good fisherman. So they send
him with an old man for fishing but an
old man got failure . So Manoline ‘s
parents told him that he will go with
other fisherman from next day. Here
manoline had desire to fishing with an old man but his father don’t allow him
and he became disappointed. So this
make Manoline despair.

4)An Old Man ‘s hope from Marline and
he became despair: An old man had
already got failure from last eighty four
days so he had hope from Marline . He
wanted to got good huge fish and
wanted to prove himself a good
fisherman.
When he caught Marline he became
happy that finally he got huge fish. He
never caught this type of huge fish in his
life so he had so much expectation from this. When he kill Marline had sympathy
for it but it was his passion that to
fishing so he killed it. He had expensive
hope from Marline . But he killed the
Marline and its blood attract other
sharks . Mako shark eat the meat of
Maeline . An old man killed Mako but
Marline’s blood attract more sharks
towards it .An old man had fight with all
the sharks but they eat half of meat of
Marline and now an old man had only
skeleton , head and tail of Marline. So
when he came back home he had
nothing to sale.
So an old man had hope from the fish
but he became despair.

5)Santiago’s hope from life:
Santiago has hope from his life. But he
also got despair from the life. He had nit
that much success in his life which he
wants. He had not family ,not wife and
not children. He had not any other friend
in his life. So in every stage of life he got
despair. At last of the novel he had hope
from fish Marline but he lost him and
became disappointed.

6)Hope from baseball player :
An old man has desire to watch and
meet with his hero (player) of baseball
Joe DiMeggio. But life not give him chance to meet him in his life. So this
also make him despair.

Conclusion:
So in this type of situation in humans life
which make them dejected and he/she
lost the hope from life.
So many people in the world who get
despair in life and they accept the defeat
in life so sometime they make suicide
and end their life. But here in this novel
an old man does not lost his hope
though he got despair in every stage of
life. There was one quote in novel that
“Man can be destroyed but not defeat
in life”.
So here we can say that the novel
swings between hope and despair.
