Introduction :
Shakespeare . A Tempest is written by Amie
Cesaire which is based in Shakespeare’s The
Tempest. Both the story has same story but
in A Tempest Cesaire done some changes.
He saw this with post colonial perspective
and made change in his A Tempest. A
Tempest focus on Ariel and Caliban.
About The Tempest:
The Tempest is written by William
Shakespeare. In this play he describe about
One king Prospero and his daughter
Miranda.
Character of Prospero and Miranda:
As the beginning of the play king Prospero
and his daughter live on one Island . Twelve years ago he was a king of Milan and she was the princess of the kingdom. King’s brother cheat with him and they came to the island.
On that island they live in cave and Prospero called his study ,there he kept his books which was treated by magic. He use his knowledge of magic and he can saw one spirit named Ariel. Ariel followed all the order given by Prospero.
Prospero talked with his daughter and tried to recognize her about their kingdom . She has some memory of her childhood and then Prospero tell him about what was the real situation and hoe they reach here.Before this Miranda has not seen any man or human being in her life. When she meet with King Naples son , the prince she fall in love with him.
Antonio, King Naples, and prince :
Antonio Was brother of king Prospero and
he cheat with his brother. So the king and
his daughter live on the island. Antonio has
good relationship with king Naples who was the enemy of King Prospero. At last they felt guilt about their work which was done by them, twelve year ago. King pardon them and he e had decided to marry his daughter with king Naples prince who loved his daughter
Ariel and Caliban :
The lively Ariel was little spirit who accept
that he took rather too much pleasure in
tormenting ugly monster called caliban.
Ariel followed all the order of Prospero and
he wants to become free from the spiritual
world. That spirit gave all the information
about other people who came on that island
by the magical power of king Prospero . At
last king give it freedom and hit goes away.
Caliban was the son of Sycorax who was the
enemy of Ariel. Prospero found him in
woods a strange misshapen thing far less
human in form rather than an ape. Caliban
got bad nature by his mother . When
Prospero tried to learn caliban language, he
can not learn that because his nature would
not let him learn anything useful. He
employed there like a slaver. His look was so
ugly and felt frighten from him .
About A Tempest:
Character of King and his daughter:
In A Tempest have same character of king
his daughter. Both play same role here which
they play in The Tempest . Cesaire not
change them.
Ariel and Caliban:
In Cesaire’s A Tempest he change the
character of Ariel and Caliban. Here Ariel was
mulatto slave and Caliban was black slave.
Here Ariel was not a spirit which we can find
in Shakespeare’s Tempest.
He doing slavery of Prospero and want to be
free so he said Prospero that he had
promised him about his freedom a thousand
time and he still waiting. So king ask that
who freed him from sycorax?
Here Caliban said Prospero as Uhuru.
Prospero doesn’t like that name so he said
Caliban that he could be polite and can said
hello. Caliban also said that if I am ugly then
that’s mean not that king is so handsome.
Here Prospero said to caliban that if he
would not understand than he will beat him.
He said that “beating is only language he really understand”. This sentence show that
how one person who colonized on native
people and tried to be violent on him/her.
Then Caliban said to king that he doesn’t
want to be called Caliban any longer. He felt
that the name Caliban given to him by his
hatred and everytime it’s spoken it’s
insulting. Then he suggest to king that call
him X. That would be better that Caliban.
Character of Eshu – A black devil God :
In Cesaire’s Tempest he add new character ,
on devil God Eshu. Calling on the Yoruba
mythological traditions of west Africa Eshu
assumes the archetypal role of the trickster
and thwarts Prospero’s power and authority
during assemblies.
So this character of Eshu we can not find in
Shakespeare ‘s The Tempest.
All other character:
All the other character like King ‘s brother
Antonio, Naples and his son Ferdinand etc
had played same role which we can find in
the Tempest.
Here we can find other characters like
Trinculo, Stephano, Juno, Irish etc.
Character of Ariel in The Tempest and A
tempest:
In The Tempest :
1) Lovely ,good ad helpful
In The Tempest by Shakespeare , Ariel is a
spirit who want to be free from Prospero .
Here he was doing slavery of Prospero . He
give him all the information about others.
Here the character of Ariel is lovely and
obeyed one who always follow order of
Prospero. He is really helpful character.
He felt good with king and thought that that
will be good for him rather too much
pleasure in tormenting an ugly monster ,
Caliban. He is son of Ariel’s enemy. Ariel gave
the lovely description of storm and the
terror of the mariners and how king’s son
Ferdinand was first who leaped into the sea.
Ariel bring the other people on island and
reach them to the king.
2)Native Slave:
In The Tempest Ariel is a native slave who is
a part of that island. He knows all the area of
island and also have information about new
comers. He is only visible to King Prospero ,
other ca not watch him. He want to be free
so he following all the order of king.
3)The Tempest present the time of
Shakespeare:
Here the character of Ariel present the time
of Shakespeare. Here he is not a mulatto
slave but a spirit. Ariel is Prospero’s eyes and ear throughout the play, using his magical abilities to cause the tempest in sea. Ariel first appears in the second scene of play to report to king on his success I carrying out
his command shipwreck.
Ariel pleased for is freedom from the
magicians’s service in return. He had been
trapped by witch Sycorax in cloven pine as a punishment for resisting her commands.
In the second act he stop a conspiracy to kill Alonso. At last Ariel was released b king Prospero and awakes what is left of the crew of the ship from deep slumber. All the other gone and Ariel is free now.
In A Tempest:
1)Resentful character:In A Tempest Ariel is a mulatto slave rather than a spirit. He is very resentful character
in Tempest. He want to get freedom from
this life. Ariel exulding Caliban against to
Prospero and wants fight with him. So he is
resentful character.
2)Mulatto slave:
In A Tempest Ariel is mulatto slave so . He is obey all the order of Prospero for getting
freedom from this slavery. Here he is
mulatto mean a man who has not one race
but the mixture of two different race’s
blood.
3)Preset post colonialism:
Here the character of Ariel present the post
colonial thing by his race . He was the
mixture of two blood. A Tempest celebrates
caliban’s verbal attacks on Prospero and
question the letter claim to the island.
Calibans resistance to Prospero ‘s control
over language. Here name of Caliban
presents cultural stereotype of colonial era.
Ariel present mixed race more able to
accept their limited oppression. So this play
present undergone by figure of caliban in
European productions of the play .
Conclusion:
So here we can say that in both Tempest , we find the difference. Here Shakespeare
present Ariel’s character as good one but Cesaire’s Tempest he present him as a
mulatto slave which preset post colonial
era. Post colonial reading of play reception in developing world clearly establish that we
can no longer recuperate Tempest as
historical text.
