Comparison between Mrs. Ramsay and
Sharda:
About To The Light House:
The novel To The Light House written by
Virginia Woolf. Novel divided in to 3
parts 1) The window 2) Time Passes and
3) To the light house. This novel has
central characters Mr. and Mrs . Ramsay.
They have 8 children , 4 boys and 4 girls.
The novel opens just before the start of
world war 1.
Mr . and Mrs. Ramsay brings their eight
children to their summer house. Across
the bay from their house stands a large
lighthouse. James Ramsay wants to go to the light house. Mrs. Ramsay said him
that if weather permits they will go. Mr.
Ramsay denied him at that time James
wants to kill his father.
The family host many of people like
Charles Tansely, Lily Briscoe , one writer
etc. Ramsay family hosts one dinner
party. Mr. Ramsay reacts rudely to
Augustus Charmichael ,a poet ask for a
second cup of soup. Mrs. Ramsay is very
careful person and she cares for every
of house and outsider of the house also.
The novel goes on and in part two Mrs
Ramsay died. After her there were so
many characters died. After that in third
part they all went to the light house.

About the character of Sharda in movie
Ghar ho to aisa:
Ghar ho to aisa movie directed by
kalpataur and produced by Firoz
ndiadwala. The Kumar family consist of
Ramprasad and his wife Durga. They
have three children. Elder son Vijay has
wife and daughter is also married.
Younger son is mature .
Vijay doesn’t like his wife sharda and
always insulting her for dawry and
beating her. The younger son loves and
respect his sister in law but he is not
able to do anything for her.
One day Vijay beat her and get out from
the house. Some year latter the younger
son married and his wife taught the
lesson to all. She also helps Sharda to
come home and movie ends.
Other female companion in both ,
movie and novel:
In novel: In To The Light House Mrs.
Ramsay has female companion named
Lily . Of course she is not with her but
she can understand the situation of mrs.
Ramsay. Lily doesn’t like to be like mrs.Ramsay. They both have different
perspective for life . Mrs . Ramsay
doesn’t like Lily’s passion of painting.
She thought that women’s first duty is
to get married and take care of husband
and children. She loves her husband and
her children very much. She sleep when
her children and husband sleeps. Lily
has no interest in man so she doesn’t
want to marry. She loves her passion of
painting and wants to live independent
life. When all the members of house
slept Mrs. Ramsay come to Lily’s room
they talk with each other . Mrs. Ramsay
said that Lily can’t understand the
feeling of wife . Lily told her that shecan’t understand the independence of
life. Mrs. Ramsay said that “open the
window and close the doors”.
Here we can say that both female
character have not understanding of
each other though they felt company
with each other.
At last in the novel, Lily complete the
painting of Mrs. Ramsay and she missed
her a lot. When she came in her room
she opens the window and close the
doors. She think about mrs.Ramsay and
feel her like she is with her now.In movie: In movie Ghar ho to aisa
Sharda has company of her sister in law.
Here also both female character has
different thought. Sharda cares for
everybody , do all the works though
have no value in her family. She get out
by her in laws but she never speak any
words against them .She suffer a lot.
While character of seema has different
thought for life. She also believe in
independence and have not interest in
man and marriage. But she marry at last
.She helps Sharda to resist her voice
against her in laws and give her
company in every situation. She taught
lesson to the in laws of Sharda and at
last family accept Sharda .
So here we can say that in novel and in
movie , both the women has female
companion.
Comparison between Mrs. Ramsay and
Sharda:
1)Housewife
Mrs.Ramsay:
Wife of Mr. Ramsay
Mrs. Ramsay is wife of Mr. Ramsay and
they have eight children. Mrs. Ramsay isa housewife . She suffer a lot in her life .
No one of her family has sympathy and
cares for her but she always cares for
everybody. She loves her family
members. When people decide to go to
the light house, she starts collecting all
the things for light house’s people only
because of her sympathetic nature and
she thought that all this things help
them.
She also have care for other outsider of
her family like Lily, Charles , poet etc.
She done hard work for family but no
one have value of her.Sharda:
Wife of Vijay:
Sharda is wife of Vijay and daughter in
law if Kumar family. She is a housewife
and she has care of all the members of
house. Her husband beat her many
times only because of his anger. Her
mother in law and sister in law ill treat
her. She has not value in her family. All
behave her with like a servant of
house. She sacrifice her happiness to
impress other but not succeed and she
get out by her family.
2)Behavior of husband
Mrs. Ramsay:
Facing anger of husband:
Mr. Ramsay is very strict person . He
always scold his children . Some time
Mrs. Ramsay also became the victim of
his anger. On one night , he doesn’t like
the taste of food and he throw the
plate and became angry on her. So
many time he became angry on Mrs.
Ramsay but she doesn’t speak any word
against him .
Sharda:
Facing anger and beaten by her
husband:
In movie Sharda facing all the members
anger. Her mother in law always find
fault in her work and became anger on
her. She use abused words also for
Sharda.
When her in laws demanded again for
more dowry , she denied them so her
husband Vijay beat her very rudely.
3)Not present in house
Mrs. Ramsay :
Death:
In second part of novel began with Mrs.
Ramsay’s death. She suddenly died. Now
she is not a part of house but she still alive in Lily’s mind and her painting. Her
death bring change in the house. Now
all the children grew up and they start
to live without mother. Any of them not
miss her . Mr. Ramsay also habituated
to live without her. At last they all go To
The Lighthouse but nobody remembers
her. So her absence in house not make
any kind of effect on family members.
Sharda:
Out from house:
Sharda is now unable to give more
dowry to her in laws and her family
starts to harass her. Her husband beat
her many time for dowry. One day he
beat her and get her out from the house.
She suffer a lot in her life. She lost her
mother also. She has not shelter and
start to spend night on footpath. She
struggled a lot but no one help her.
4)Value after leaving
Mrs. Ramsay:
Value after her death:
In Ramsay house , when Mrs. Ramsay
live no one valued her. Every time she
face problem . After her death no one
miss her but somewhere and somehow
people feel her absence. Now the
management of house is not well, all the
things scattered . Mr. Ramsay also miss
her and felt her absence in life. He tries
to find the sympathy from other women
now which he got from his wife. Lily also
miss her a lot.
Sharda:
Value after she leave the house:
Sahrda left the house and start to live
the life in outside. But here the family
miss her character and valued after she
went. People facing problem to do the
house work which she do. When she was
there she done all the work of house
and cooking alone but now ladies of
house facing problem to manage house
work. So she valued while she left the
house.
Similarity between Sharda and Mrs.
Ramsay :
1)Love children and care for them
Mrs. Ramsay loves a lot her children and
have care for them. When James scold
by his father , she handle the situation.
She told the stories to James and give
him company in night because he felt
frighten from bore skull.
Sharda has one daughter and she loves
her a lot. She cares for her and for her
education. When her father beat her
Sharda save her from her father. When
she left the house she took her
daughter with her.
2)Silently listen when husband scold:
Mrs. Ramsay not resist her voice against
her husband. When he scold her she
listen silently. She spend tear in corner
of house but not show her pain to
anybody.
Sharda also not resist her voice against
her husband and respect him. When he
beat her , a that time also she not resist
her voice and tolerate the violence .
3)Not valuable character:
Mrs. Ramsay has care for everybody , do
all the hose work and tolerate all the bad
behavior of husband though has not any
vale in family.
Sharda has not any vale in her family
though she cares for everybody and
tolerate the violence of family member.
So we can find this type of similarities in
both the character.
Conclusion:
So here we can compare the female
character of novel and movie. Both has
same situation in life.
This comparison make us aware about
the situation of women in our society.
Both is present the modern age though
we can find this type of situation of
women in society. We live in 21st still we
believe in gender discrimination.
