On 25th and 26th  February ,in Department of English MKBU we have guest lecture by R.B Zala sir from saurashtra University Rajkot on Waiting for Barbarians by J.M Coetzee. Zala sir's main subject is comparative study. He has done work on anti Marxist works also. He is interested in short story.

Post-colonial idea in novel:-
Zala sir had talk  first  on the post colonial idea.In novel the colony of Africa was rulled by Britishers. This book present the idea of 'we' and 'other' by Britisher and native people. Homogeneity and decolonization is main post colonial idea of the novel .

About Hind Swaraj:-
Sir connect the story here with Hind Swaraj. It shows the theme of humanity rather than about independence and other movement. Here Mahatma Gandhi talk about British rule on India and other country that how they colonize the native people and rulled on them . Same as Britishers wants to rulled on Barbarian and want to make them their slaves.

About Waiting for Barbarians:-
Here he introduce first about the novel and its basic theme. How the empire send the Magistrate to rule on Barbarian people. He spend  so many years with Barbarians and have sympathy for him.
Chapter 1 of the novel introduce us with the character of Magistrate . Also the incident of old man and his son  that how the man was beaten by white people and die. After that what was the reaction of white people on  this incident. They have done wrong report about the man that he tried to attack on white man and for self defense , the white man  shoot him. It present the reality of British empire. Dreams also play vital role from the beginning to end.

Chapter 2 and 3 is about Magistrate and his relationship with one Barbarian girl. Actually he wants to save the life of that blind girl and send her to her family. He asked so many questions to that girl and with this he use her body and slept with her so many time. Magistrate molest the girl many time . At the end he has no idea that what he had done wrong with that girl. Here this girl play vital role in novel that how British empire molest  the women of native people .
In chapter 4 and 5 of novel , Magistrate become again the part of the empire and leave the tribal people. He was in prison of empire and tries to come out from it. He ran away from the prison but had not found any place to go so come back to the prison again.
In the last chapter colonel  Joll  made free the Magistrate and the novel ends with dream.

So this all the incident was described by sir very well. He has given more information about another topics  which is related with  history of this book and about African culture.
The session was really fruitful for me.
