Learning E.A. poe 's Short stories by Dr. Jay Mehta
On 19-20-21-22 in our Department of English MKBU Dr .Dilip Barad organized guest lecture by Dr. Jay Mehta. Jay Mehta is teaching now in Ahemdabad.
During those days he introduce us to short stories of Edgar Allan Poe.
Let's discuss Poe's short stories characteristics in brief .
1)Horror element:-
Poe was the father of Detective story. In Poe's short story we can find romance or love theme but very horror ,terror and detective type of stories which creates horror atmosphere in readers mind.
2) Violent characters:-
In Poe's short story the main protagonist of the story is very violent. He /she always became violent on animals or human beings.
3)Theme of revenge:-
Some of Poe's short story in which we can find theme of revenge like The cask of Amontillado. This is based on revenge.
4)Murder is like basic theme:-
In Poe's major stories , theme is murder. Many of his stories in which we can find murder as a basic theme. Reason behind it is disgust things, anger,or somehow revenge also.
5)Manipulative characters:
Poe's all the characters are very manipulative. After murder they have not any kind of repentance . They also not leave any proof after the murder.
1st day :-
On 19th september he introduce Poe and his two stories. 1]The tell -tale heart.
2] The black cat.
In Tell- tale heart one man has hate for one old man's blue eye that's why on one night he killed the old man.
In The black cat he felt anger on his cat and kill it.
In both of above story narrator has not any kind of self contradiction. They accept their crime very easily.
2nd day:-
On second day he taught us another 2 short stories of Poe.
1)The fall of house of Usher and 2)The cask of Amontillado..
In these stories Poe creates horror atmosphere and make fear.
The second story is based on revenge theme.
3rd day:-
On 3rd day he taught us 2 stories
The Purloined Letter and The Gold Bug. First is detective type story and second is about the suspense of treasure.
4th day:-
On 22 september the session was about poetry. Jay sir introduce us how to write poems . He aslo read some of his poems. He writes Gujarati poem and introduce us with best Gujarati poets.
This was amazing session on poems.
Poetry is the heart of literature which leads us towards the world of imagination and feelings. He talked about some good applications in which we can find best poems.
What I learnt from him?
His teaching method is too good . He is the best teacher in my life. I have found the image of Dr. R.K. Mandaliya sir in him.Here I am using the word teacher rather than professor because teacher taught us not only that lessons which are in our syllabus but also taught us the lessons of life.
I learnt from him is that how to control on your anger. From him I learnt that how to teach and treat your students. Always tries to understand your students first. This will help to teacher and students both.
So Jay Mehta is one of my best teacher.
