Movie screening of Morning Becomes Electra.
On 24th september in our Department of English MKBU we have movie screening of Morning Becomes Electra. This was amazing experience of watching movie. This movie is based on play by O'Neill which has same title.
In this movie and in original play there were no huge difference. One can find similarities in both.
My observation of the movie Morning Becomes Electra:-
Christine' s life:-
Christine is a wife of Ezra Manon and they have two children. Ezra had gone for war and here Christine has extra marital affair with Adam Brant. When Ezra Manon come back from war Christine is not able to face him . She can not do eye contact with her husband . She has not any feeling for her husband. That shows that she has done something wrong. Her daughter is aware about her affair with Adam Brant.
Character of Lavinia:-
Lavinia Manon is a daughter of Ezra and Christine. She loves Adam Brant but when she came to know about her mother's affair with Adam,she starts to hate him. In movie and play Lavinia has habit to interfere in all others life. She is the reason of all person's death at the end of the movie.
Her emotional feelings are not for one but it moves to one to another. First she loves Adam Brant then has feeling for her father and after his death she loves Petter.
Death is like a central theme:-
In movie and play we can find that death as central theme because as time passes ,all the characters of play are die one by one. Christine kills her husband then Orin killed Adam Brant, then Christine committed suicide , after that Orin committed suicide. So here death and suicide is like central theme.
Fragmentation:-
In play , all the characters are like fragmented. They have not same idea . They have not ideal thought. Lavinia becomes main reason of fragmentation .
Electra complex and Oedipus complex:-
In movie and play ,there is importance of myth of Electra complex and Oedipus complex. Lavinia shows Electra complex , she loves her father and wants to be wife of him. She said that she can not love to Petter because her father needs her.
Other side Orin shows Oedipus complex, he loves her mother and wants her love forever. He can not tolerate her relationship with Adam Brant and he kill him on Adam'S ship.
Revenge theme:-
Christine wants to take revenge for Adam Brant'' s death to her daughter. She hates Lavinia and her hatred is increase after Adam' s death.
Lavinia aslo wants to take revenge to her mother because she killed her father . Adam Brant wants revenge to Ezra Manon. So here we can clearly find theme of revenge.
No freshness in life:-
Here we can not find freshness in any one of characters life. All have their individual thoughts but have no ideal thoughts. Same as in house also we can not find freshness. All have fake relationship. No one has true feelling for other family members.
Absence of God:-
In movie and play ,there is absence of God. No one has faith in God. Author and director not mentioned about God. No religious and cultural thing there. This aslo symbolized the barrenness of mind and heart of people.
